Well, my football, basketball, soccer-playing son, Josiah had his knee go out on him again at the beginning of this football season. We sat with the doctor and talked about it. Bottom line, if we did nothing it would happen again. His knee cap was not exactly where it was supposed to be. We talked with a surgeon who has had a lot of success with these sort of operations, though I admit I was pretty hesitant and worried about him having surgery at his age.

Still, Jo is 16 and he likes his sports, and this could save him a lot of problems next year. He'll have a good long time to heal before training this summer. And boy do I know what it does to your body when you let an injury go untreated for a long time. Remember my great toe surgeries?

His surgery was on Monday and I wouldn't have been anywhere but by his side. We talked them into a little preventative medication for the nausea, and I'm glad we did. Both his mother and I, and his little brother have been hit pretty hard by the after affects of anesthesia. Funny how holding the pan for your own child's vomit does not bother you the way it does when a stranger barfs. Is this parental instinct or what?

Oh, and the surgeon gave us a disk with pics and film clips from the arthroscopic surgery. I frankly couldn't watch much of it, but the brothers insist that they'll be posting it on You Tube soon.

Anyway, he's encamped in his room with video games and brothers and mother to wait on him this week. I'll be checking in regularly with him. Think of him and send a prayer or warm vibe his way if you think of it. It's no fun being an active teenager (heck it wasn't as an adult!) and being stuck at home and in pain. Besides he can't take the pain pills the way I liked to when I had the chance, with a beer!

Best wishes to Josiah for a speedy recovery!

It's never fun to be sidelined with an injury. Make sure he does his phyisical therapy during recovery. I've learned the hard way that that can be as critical as the surgery.

You're in our payers.

Thank you, Paul. Much appreciated. He's having an obviously rough week. Only sixteen and to be going through this is something. I had my foot surgeries in my late thirties. I didn't really want my kids to go through that kind of thing. But I'm hanging tough for him.

Thanks!

Anyone else have to watch their kids go through such things?
