Hi all...

I was out for dinner with friends on Friday night and after a great meal we went to a new-ish mens, gay bar for a couple of drinks and a chat. We knew we might meet another couple of guys that we know, they are more friends of our dinner companions, but a great couple of guys.

Now these two fellas would be in their early/ mid 30's I guess, work hard, have their own homes, have been dating for a few years now but did have a spell apart in the middle. They always seemed to be party animals, up for a good time, but family guys too, in that as is right and proper for gay men they looked after their Mums and helped out their dads...lol.

Well we got talking and they had quite a piece of news to share. Turns out Mark, to cut a long and personal story short, has been fostering his nephew for six months. For a bunch of reasons the kids parents were in a bad way, this boy and his sister were being passed from pillar to post so Mark...and his partner stepped up and decided the right thing had to be done! AND the decision has just about been made by all concerned that it is best if they adopt the little guy....who is now only 16 months old.

It was just so remarkable and quite fantastic to see these two men, so very happy and excited about being fathers, and happliy, in this butch gay bar showing photos of this most adorable wee guy and chatting about how life can have suprises for you that just can't be anticipated. They have had to make changes, adapt, and learn, but it is just typical, and no less than I would expect of many of the guys I know. Society might not think they would/could...even should fulfil this role but they...we can, and it is a very fine thing that we do. Talking to them reminds me of my partners reaction, and that of so many of my good friends to my own son. Gay guys have for so long accepted...tolerated the fact that having kids is something, an experience they are unlikely to experience and enjoy, so when they get the chance to be, even honorary uncles, they take to the role with relish, which has a wonderfuly positive effect on the children.

I wish my friends well...and their roll call of wanabbe uncles...that kid is a lucky guy.
