Unpacked the Suitcase |
My partner, Steven and I adopted our son from Cambodia 8 years ago - he is now 9 years old and amazing! Steven and I have been together fro almost 18 years. Harrison has recently been asking to meet other families like his - two Dad (or even two Moms). We have been search in Fairfield County Connecticut for several months and have finally found "GayFatherhood". Hopefully this will be a great avenue to meet other families and give Harrison the opportunity to meet other children with Gay Dads and to give a a bit of a support network as he gets into his teen years.
Any advice on hooking up with families or other avenues to meet families would be great. |

David's Brain Buying the House! |
Warmest of welcomes to you GR, Steven and Harrison!!
Please forgive us if you haven't had as quick a response as you may have hoped for.... heck, we're all dads with families to raise so sometimes internet time is rare!!! But. we're glad to have you here and I hope some of our members from your area will get in touch with you... well, heck, members from any area would be cool to get in touch with you... You are, perhaps, somewhat unique as many of our dads here are fathers from marriages with women... but, please, don't let that put you off... we strive to include such parents as you and your partner... we're just all guys who want to raise darn fine kids and do that by setting the best example... Wish I was physically closer to you and your family so I could meet you... and not so close chronoligally to grandfatherhood so we'd have more in common... At any rate, welcome again and I hope that our site may be of use to you. Maybe David (sonofwalt) will be available for a chat tomorrow night... that used to be our normal procedure.... All the best, The very old and insufferably content Smokey "This above all: to thine ownself be true. And it must follow, as the night the day, Thou canst not then be false to any man. Hamlet |

Yes, welcome! And thanks for letting me know you got my welcome letter. I spend some time trying to personally send out an individual welcome message to every new member, but noone ever lets me know they actually get the message... glad to know it wasn't an exercise in futility!
Yes, as Smokey said, we are happy to have all kinds of dads here, and more and more seem to stop by who are dads by adoption. It is marvelous that more frequently gay men have that option in our world. As for meeting, Smokes and I have met many times in person, and I almost met BillN, while Smokey went on a road trip with him. lol. I know that Brian and Kip have met... oh heck, who did you guys meet and hang out with? And of course Smokey and I have also had the great pleasure of meeting our transatlantic friend Vince from the Emerald Isle. He and his partner are trying to arrange vacation arrangements with me and mine again this year. So opportunities for friendships and expanding one's social horizons abound here I believe. And since you are in the North East US, there seem to be a great many of us in this area. Smokey and I were talking about having some sort of regional get togethers... maybe even a summer picnic. Knobel's grove, a local amusement park in central PA has a gay day every year, though sponsored by local glbt groups, not the park itself. I can look into dates and see... in July sometime, I think. Oh, and as for chat... Smokey please go on without me, I think Brian has a date in mind for us. But last Friday we had a fairly successful little resurrection of the old Friday night chat. Shall I send out invitations? I am not young enough to know everything. - Oscar Wilde |

Hi There,
Welcome to Gayfatherhood.com. Sadly to say, I'm located in the Southeast, Greensboro, NC, to be specific. I'm a single gay dad with 3 kids. My oldest is in NYC, where I visit often, and the other 2 kids are at home, with me. I do hope you guys enjoy gayfatherhood...If you ever want to chat, just let me know... On the Door Step! |
Hey, GRH, Steven and Harrison,
First let me say it always makes me happy to hear that a child has been adopted. So many kids need loving families. About meeting other gay families: Is there a GLBT community center near you? Many times they'll have lists of nearby organizations for couples with children. You also might want to look at the group, COLAGE. They're a national group for kids with a gay parent or parents. www.colage.org. I noticed there were a couple of COLAGE chapters in Connecticut. Don't know how far from you they are -- but it looks like a gay-male couple runs one of them, Eric Lazarus and Jason Charette. The email address is colagect@yahoo.com (there's a phone number: (860)922-3868 -- I assume I can post this number here since it's listed on the web.) Hope this information is up to date. Also, a great resource (since you don't live that far away) is the glbt center on W. 13th Street in NYC. www.gaycenter.org Much happiness with your family. Nick (aka: BasicNick) |
