Okay, this is not really my bio, but I published it on my journal at journalspace.com while trying to get a handle on the bio for our Contact Us page. Daniel rightly insists that I don't make it too long, so forgive me if I steal a little bit from it when I do send my bio to Daniel. :-)
I hate writing bios. I even hate those blasted emails full of interview questions. Why not make them more interesting, by the way? What's your favorite flavor of music? What's the best movie you've ever tasted? How long did its smell linger on your tongue? What color of regret has had the most influence on your appetite, and why? But a website I created three years ago as an MSN support community has gone through many changes over the years and is now in a growing state of wise old infancy. GayFatherhood.com, a place for men who have two things in common; they are gay and the loving, nurturing and raising of their children is the most precious aspect of their lives. I have met literally some of the best friends I have in the world there. Vincent, of Northern Ireland, who recently came to visit again with his partner David and son Conor gave me the pleasure of leading his commitment ceremony with David on board a cruise ship two years ago. Marcel, of Marbella Spain has been more encouragement and inspiration than he can possibly know, with all his firey conviction, balanced with a depth of wisdom and more quotes than Progressive Car Insurance. You can see more of them in the links to their blogs in my link list. Of course there is strong and steady Bill, who has been a model of strength with a heart bigger than his home state of Texas. Let's not forget the Angel of New York City, the constant diplomat and ambassador of GF, Wayne. There have been many others as well and it would take all day to try to name them all. And then there is my dear brain and brother Keith, who lives two hours south of me in Maryland, and who will be coming up to help me (oh, I am so thankful, bro) after my foot surgery in early September. And of course, there was Dennis, my mentor and father-figure, who's life was cut short unexpectedly by the monster of cancer two years ago. I am unspeakably grateful to each of them. So how do I write a bio for a site like that, which started simply because I could not find the sort of family-friendly site I was looking for, but has evolved into a network of beautiful and loving souls over the last three years? It has now moved to its own space on the web and I am grateful for my brothers who have donated to help pay the costs. My three sons, Josiah, Jonathan and Micah are growing faster than I can keep up with, and these men have made me feel less alone in my desire to be the best father to them that I can be. How do I write such a bio? Well, yes. Perhaps I just have. I am not young enough to know everything. - Oscar Wilde |
